Over two decades of being into the interior designing industry and Preeti Dhall, director design, Livespace Interiors Pvt. It is not just the homes that do the talking of her interior design brilliance, but apart from residential, she specialises in commercial, corporate and hospitality projects. Name it and Preeti has made her mark at well-known properties across Delhi-NCR. Starting from Clarks Inn (Deoghar), Clarks Inn (Bareilly) to Tata Primanti (Gurugram), there are a number of other leading Delhi-NCR projects to her credit.
Design for energy efficiency
Heating and lighting are the two most crucial factors interior designers have influence over.

A 20 year old tale, how it all started? Passing with flying colours from Women’s Polytechnic, Delhi, Preeti wanted to do something creative. It was then she got attracted to the world of interior designing with art and travel playing a major role into it. “Though I am interior designer, everything that inspires me comes from the basis of art. I always make sure to make a very strong connect between art and interiors. Travel is something that follows next,” shared the interior designer.
With summer heat setting in, Preeti gives the magical interior tips.
DO’S AND DON’TS BY INTERIOR DESIGNER PREETI DHALL
DO’S
-Mix warm and cool colours in your house. In many interiors, often, either warm or cool colours are used. I think this brings boredom in the interior space very quickly. It’s always better to add a combination of warm and cool colours to your interiors.
-Group and organise to create a balanced and relaxed atmosphere. I would recommend you to group the accessories and furniture instead of placing everything throughout your house.
-Give your house a wink.
-Mix and match.
-Wait and buy accessories while planning a move or renovation.
DON’TS
-Choose a wrong format. When you have a XL space, go for that size and also use XL staff. So, that you can keep everything in proportion within your house.
-Put furniture against the wall. If you set up furniture, even in a small apartment, put the sofa or chairs not against the wall but some centimetres away. Place the cabinet perpendicular to the walls so that it can give the impression of a divider.
-Use small cheap pillow in your interior space.
-Save on lighting.
-Paint the wall in a colour when you are not 100 per cent sure about it.

Design for waste reduction
Interior designers have a lot of power in their hands when it comes to waste reduction and at the same time a big responsibility to act sustainably.
PREETI DHALL
As the phrase goes, “There is no rose without a thorn”, meaning, “To enjoy any beautiful or pleasant thing; you must endure something difficult or painful.” Similarly, it wasn’t a bed of roses for Preeti for there are many challenges in the field of interior designing.
5 MAJOR CHALLENGES IN THE INTERIOR DESIGNING FIELD:
Scheduling and time management.
Managing client expectations.
Finding the right people.
Helping the cash flow.
Managing cost.
The challenges were becoming tougher within the existing loopholes the interior designing has. Ask Preeti how she has won over the prevailing ambiguities and she mentioned, “The Indian mentality forces us to impress others. In this game of winning others hearts with the impression created for the luxe home setups, the clients usually brief the designers to create homes that make the guests stare in awe when they enter the homes. But, it is a well-known fact; home is where the heart is. Our homes are our abodes, our safe haven and they should be done up in a manner that they speak for our identity and is a reflection of our personality.”
Design for low environmental impact
From sustainability perspective, it’s very important to pick materials and products with the lower environmental impact. The environmental impact of materials and products must be evaluated throughout their entire life cycle from extraction, production, transportation and processing, all the way to now they are discarded after use.

But, all the hard work done never goes into waste. Getting the second best award for Clark Inn Hotel, Jharkhand project has brought her laurels.
Design for longevity and flexibility
To prevent materials and products getting discarded too often, interior designers should consider the lifespan of any material they plan to use. Especially for those elements that experience a lot of wear and tear. The goal of designing for longevity is to design durable and timeless spaces and suppress to urge to change the whole design every couple of years.
PREETI DHALL
As a piece of advice to the budding interior designers, Preeti shared:
1. Start young and see what excites you.
2. Believe in yourself.
3. Practice your maths, it’s not about choosing lovely curtains.
4. Consider an internship.
5. Don’t blow the budget.
6. Be brave.
7. Don’t aim for perfection. Things don’t have to be perfect to be beautiful. If you go into a room and it’s all perfect, you will not feel comfortable. A home interior is not an abstract thing, it’s about people, it’s about the way you feel, the way you interact, it’s about family and friends and it’s the backdrop to your life.
8. Look for inspiration in everything and get to know your clients.
9. Take your time with colour and lighting.
10. Be empathetic and think about how a room makes you feel. You have to empathise with your client. Being an interior designer can mean lots of things, there is a little bit of being a nanny in there, a little bit of psychology and lots of empathy.
Design for healthy environment
There are several factors to keep in mind when trying to design healthy spaces such as the quality of the air, heating, ventilation, lighting and acoustics.
